Lesson overview
In this lesson you investigate a real local democracy dilemma — a city council's decision to close the only youth centre in a district — and work through the full cycle of civic reasoning: encountering the problem, investigating both sides, forming an evidence-based position, and creating a real civic communication.
The lesson has one unique feature: you vote twice. In Task 3, you cast your first instinctive reaction before any investigation. In Task 7, you vote again after exploring both sides, learning to distinguish fact from propaganda, and discovering what civic tools citizens actually have. The comparison between your two votes — did your position change? — is the central learning moment of the lesson.
The dilemma runs through every task: Task 3 introduces it. Tasks 4–6 investigate it from three angles (arguments, critical literacy, civic tools). Task 7 asks for your final evidence-based position. Tasks 9–10 ask you to act on it — and then connect it to something real in your own life.
